Oliver begins a new journey

IMG_3290Our sweet boy Oliver (3 years old last week) got away from me yesterday on our mid day walk and tried (unsuccessfully) to take down a mail truck.  We are waiting for the surgeons to let us know when he is strong enough and ready for surgery.  He’s gonna loose his back right leg.  The wound was just too severe to mend.  I, we feel…well, so much emotion right now and I’m hoping his site will help me and my sister (we share Olly and his sister Bernie) through this new journey with our pup(s).   🙁

  1. Hi and welcome. I adopted my second Tripawd Elly about 7 months ago. She was hit by a car when she was 7 months old and lost her back right leg, she will be 1.5 years old next month. Elly is a small pug mix who does just fine on three. You can check out her blog here: http://rescueelly.tripawds.com
I’m sure you are dealing with a lot of emotions right now- after Olly heals up he will amaze you with his abilities!

    1. Thank you Karen and the Pug Girls! We’re doing well. Olly came home on Sunday and is resting and beginning his healing. We are so grateful to all of you here and look forward to getting to know you all and our new community of TriPawds! Someone said to me…”Three is the new Four”. Made me smile. 🙂

  2. Trying to take down a mail truck??? OMD OLIVER! You are one feisty pup!

Gosh, I know you are absolutely traumatized by all of the events. At least your ADORABLE Oliver is full of pain meds and probably not too concerned about anything!

My apologies for having to head for work. I’ll definitely be back later tonight to check in.

In the meantime, don’t hesitate to call our helpline for support and information.

I know amputation sounds scary. You will be astounded at well he does on three legs after recovery! And..shhh…don’t tell the big dogs…But little dogs usually adapt faster!

The picture you posted is soooo cute! He is melting my heart over here!!

    1. Thank you Sally, Hannah, Myrtle and Frankie! Boy are we glad you are here. These comments and this information is so helpful and comforting. Olly had his surgery on Friday and came home on Sunday. He’s doing well. Mostly sleeping. We look forward to getting to know our new TriPawd family. 🙂

  3. Poor Olly! I hope you are strong enough soon for your surgery. My Bandit is 10 and a half. He had his back right leg amputated on the 12th of May. There is hope!!! Bandit has cancer and so the leg had to go. I can honestly say he has adapted to three legs with more grace than I could possibly muster. It will be okay. Rest and time are great healers. Keep up with the pain meds and Olly will thrive! Bandit and Deb

    1. Thank you Deb and Bandit! Olly is doing good. He’s mostly resting, but already walking a little bit. I so appreciate your comments. I look forward to posting pics and stories of my boy running and playing again.

  4. Sorry to hear about Oliver! This site will guide you through the whole process, they’re life savers! Welcome to the family…

    1. Thank you Paula and Nitro! We’re hanging in there and so so happy to have found this awesome community of support and info.

  5. I am so sorry to hear about this. I cannot imagine the emotions you are feeling. The good news is that Oliver can live a happy and full life as a tripawd. Younger and smaller dogs tends to do well on three legs. The first 10 days to 2 weeks after surgery will be tough, but then you will be amazed as you see him start to perk up and get around again. Please keep us posted – there is a beyond cancer forum where you could post, and everyone can see your updates. (The blogs are great for photos, but they can roll off fairly quickly unless you start a new page for each update)

    1. Thank you so much! These comments are helping us so very much. I’m glad I found you guys. Olly is doing good. He’s even been up walking a wee bit. He’s still resting mostly. We’re still waiting for a poo, but he’s peeing well.

  6. Oh my goodness is he cute. Is he is cockapoo? We had those dogs in my childhood. I bet he will do fine. Smaller dogs do really well. Others will chime in but do read all the books available here and feel free to ask us for any help.

  7. Thank you Penny! He’s doing great, he’s already been up and walking a bit. He’s a terrier mix. We rescued Olly and his sister Bernie three years ago. I so appreciate your comments. 🙂
